Okay, while I love the amount of expressions you've given him here, especially the one with a frontal view which we don't get often from the show, I have to laugh at how you made the aura from his eyes burst forth like steam when he gets angry! Brilliant!
the head-on one that's not the smoke cloud should be when he says "GRRRRRR! THAT IS MINE!" and when he growls before saying "that is mine" the smoke should already be there and shoot up vertical (and by "already be there " I mean as in EVERY SCENE OF him should have that eyesmoke and green sclera (the official name fore the white part of your eyes)present, just the length and direction of the eyesmoke would change (but it would never point forward))
Thanks man! XD The one with smoke from his eyes is my personal fav; I can imagine him growing bigger, covering himself with the dark fog, kinda like Ursula does in the last final battle in The Little Mermaid
He was really cool! The build up for this guy was done brilliantly and he was genuinely scary. You feared for the heroes and wanted to see him stopped. Not to mention the fact that in order to stop anyone who wanted to take the crystal heart, he planned out far enough in advance because he knew that there would be an uprising so his return would be all the more terrifying for the Crystal ponies.
He did nothing besides roar, scream and snarl, and he barely talked. He hardly showed any personality or clear motivations. He didn't actively plot against the heroes. And he didn't live past two episodes.
But did he really have to?
You see, King Sombra has more of what many MLP villains thus far lack: presence. It was his presence alone that made sure the Crystal Ponies remained miserable. It was his presence that kept them from remembering where the Crystal Heart was, or going to the one place it was hidden because they were too scared of him. Just by being there, Princess Cadance was left to suffer for days on end, even with her beloved Shining Armor by her side.
And even then, he still tried to make sure the heroes didn't have their way. He took away Shining Armor's powers, causing Princess Cadance to suffer even more. He left traps that those without the courage and wits to stand up to them could not pass. And even though he wasn't always physically present, his influence remained, and it left a very heavy impact on everyone who dared to stand against him. He also managed to do what no other villain on the show has done before: make Twilight swallow her own pride as a means to defeat him.
From everywhere he went to everywhere his name was merely mentioned, he caused nothing but pain and suffering. And not a single one of us knows why.
And yet the lot of you have the gall to call him "wasted potential", just because he barely talked or took action, had no clear characterization, and didn't live up to any of your lofty expectations. But I'll be fair; even I expected him to be Sauron as he was before he was slain by Isildur, not Sauron as he appeared in the whole "Lord of the Rings" trilogy.
Sometimes, less really is more. That is why he is, to me, a far greater villain than any of us could have ever anticipated.
This guy is arguably THE most poorly used character ever, and in a show like MLP:FIM that may not mean much but for me it does. Here I was thinking up all sorts of possible awesome roles for him , leader of an army of crystal golems set to raise Equestria to the ground, a possible relationship with one of the princesses most likely Luna , father of Skyla or corrupter of the elements. I watched this episode only for him, I ignored the songs and childish things and waited for my piece of Sombra, and I get 2 minutes screen time and 15 spoken words. You people say he is like Sauron, I remember Sauron as a towering mountain of death dealing awesomeness not as an eye that floats above a tower and whispers stuff in your ear, he was good at that but never trully awesome ( I have never read the books, just watched the movies). Discord is still the character with the most developed personality, and that's saying much. Sombra was a painful dissapointment, but maybe I had too high expectations, maybe that's why A Canterlot Wedding surprised me, I wasn't expecting and epic clash but an entire episode filled with gut wrenching songs and dances. The only thing good about this guy was his voice and his return. Yes, return. When he is so disgustingly and anti-climatically blown to bits we can see his horn, the only thing left of him, flying away. And only the tip was needed to break down the shield, imagine what the whole thing would do. You can say as many thing as you want about my views, you may call me an egotistical, malevolant, cheeky, up-stuck SOB. You may call me the Killer of Santa and the Ravager of the Easter Bunny, I don't care. I need my spicy badassness to balance the sugar coated girly stuff or I'm gonna die of mental breakdown diabetes.
King Sombra: Imprisoned, given only a little backstory, hardly any motivation. Anticlimactically defeated. Queen Chrysalis: Has no backstory at all, Has the only level of motivation in any villain in this series, no character. Discord: Imprisoned, given only a little backstory, no motivation all all (spirit of chaos). Anticlimactically defeated. NMM: Imprisoned, given only a little backstory, has some level of motivation, no character.
So why do you pick King Sombre now to rant about the lack of developed villains? Cause they all are in the end. The major difference between all of them was their presentation, and their themes. They're not going to add almost everything mentioned above for each character in two half an hour children's episodes anyway. So go and write your own fanfics for what you want if you so badly want a developed Sombre. That's what everybody else did for NMM, Chrysalis, and Discord, anyway.
I mean gosh, it's a show about ponies. Did you expect The Lord of the Rings?
I don't think your being harsh at all. This character was so underdeveloped that it hurts. And it makes me really sad since this character had so much potential. pictures of him gives him so much more personality then what the show itself did. Hopefully this won't be the last we see of him. I know I'm grabbing for straws since he was blown up and you saw his freaking horn flew away. Then again a unicorns source of power is in their horn so there might be a chance! 8D But I got a feeling that the show writes have already forgotten about him. >_>

I really just love your work with expressions. You pull them off extraordinarily well. I hope you don't mind, if I could you your sketches as points of reference for sketching him myself? ( They're honestly the clearest images of him I've seen ).
